Tacoma woman killed in crash with semi in Illinois

A Tacoma woman was killed Tuesday when her car and a tractor-trailer rig collided on Interstate 72 near Springfield, according to the Illinois State Police.

Mary “Skip” Oldfield, 69, was pronounced dead at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

The accident happened about 10:30 a.m. as Oldfield’s car was merging into the westbound lanes of the interstate.

For unknown reasons, she turned sharply into the path of the semi, which struck the driver’s side door of her car, the State Police said.

The car came to rest in the center of the westbound lanes.

The driver of the semi, Lonnie G. Damm, 50, of Palmyra, Illinois, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Oldfield was the receptionist at the Tacoma law firm Gordon Thomas Honeywell for 27 years. She was in Illinois to visit friends, according to coworkers.
