A handful of agencies in Pierce County will hold remembrance ceremonies Friday (Sept. 11) in honor of the 14th anniversary of terrorists attack in 2001.
▪ The Tacoma Fire Department will hold its annual ceremony at 9 a.m. at the Firefighters Memorial, 3301 Ruston Way. Speeches will be given by Mayor Marilyn Strickland, Deputy Fire Chief Toryono Green and a New York Fire lieutenant.
▪ West Pierce Fire & Rescue will hold a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at Lakewood City Hall, 6000 Main St. SW. Another event will be at 7 p.m. at the 9/11 Reflection Park outside Station 31, 3631 Drexler Drive W., University Place.
▪ Milton will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its 9/11 memorial at noon at the VFW Memorial at Milton Community Park, also known as Triangle Park, at Fifth Avenue and Milton Way.
The city received a 36-foot-tall piece of steel from Building 2 of the World Trade Center. The artifact weighs nearly 18,000 pounds and once was a window section stretched between the 91st and 94th floor of the building.
