Woman dies in Lakewood apartment fire

A woman died Wednesday in a Lakewood apartment fire, West Pierce Fire & Rescue officials said.

The blaze broke out about noon at the Hall Northwest apartments at 6116 112th Street Southwest.

The fire started in and was contained to what appeared to be the victim’s bedroom, where she was found, West Pierce spokeswoman Jenny Weekes said.

Officials described the victim as elderly. Her name was not released.

Initial reports were that the two people who lived in the apartment were not accounted for, but the other person, apparently the woman’s son, was found uninjured, and evidently wasn’t home at the time, Weekes said.

It wasn’t clear what caused the blaze.

It’s the second fatal fire West Pierce has responded to this week.

Mary Ann Gough, 82, died Monday in a fire at her University Place duplex near Sunset Drive West and 40th Street West.

Pierce County Fire Marshal Warner Webb said investigators believe Gough’s misplaced cigarette started the fire in the master bedroom, which sustained the most damage.
