A woman and her two dogs were found dead Wednesday inside a burning RV near Roy, according to South Pierce Fire & Rescue.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as 55-year-old Penny Fields of Roy.

Firefighters were called to a property near 286th Street East and 11th Avenue East just before 7 a.m. and found the recreational vehicle engulfed in flames.

“The fire was spreading to a large, large wooden barn that doubled as a horse stable,” said Chris Grant, a deputy fire chief.

Neighbors helped lead about 10 horses out of the barn, which was just north of the RV, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The bodies of the woman and dogs were found after the fire was put out. A cause has not been determined.

A firefighter who hurt his foot while battling the blaze was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, Grant said.
