Officials identify driver killed in Fife accident

A man who died Friday on Interstate 5 in Fife after crashing his Jaguar into a barrier has been identified as Thomas James.

State troopers are still investigating what caused James, 61, of Mercer Island, to lose control. It’s unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

The accident happened about 10 p.m. Friday near Milepost 137.

A driver called 911 to report a 2008 Jaguar sedan weaving across multiple lanes of traffic before crashing into a barrier, the State Patrol said.

It was the first traffic fatality in Pierce County in 2016.
