New sports program for Tacoma elementary students

A partnership between Tacoma Public Schools and three other organizations will offer a new after-school sports program for elementary school students, beginning in the fall.

Partnering with the school district are Metro Parks Tacoma, the Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound, and the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties.

The program will offer soccer and basketball in the fall and flag football and baseball/fast pitch softball in the spring.

School teams will play each other. Younger students will practice and play on co-ed teams; older students might be split into age-appropriate single-sex teams, depending on numbers.

Practices will be after school with games played on weekends.

Cost to participate is $55 a child. Scholarships are available.
