Poverty is everywhere, even in beautiful Gig Harbor.
St. Nicholas Catholic School is teaching its students how to help.
This month, students collected more than 1,000 food items for the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul pantry. They celebrated the end of the food drive by creating a “human food chain” to transfer the donated items from the school campus to the pantry on the church grounds. The St. Vincent de Paul pantry will distribute the food to Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula families in need.

“We get to help the needy and learn how to help our community,” third-grader Jeannie Hewitson said in a release.
Cynthia Schmidt, a fifth-grader, added, “We need to help people get food who don’t have it.”
Outreach is part of campus life at the school. Every class performs an ongoing service to the school or parish.
“It’s heartwarming to see our students of all ages acting out the school’s mission to serve,” said Principal Amy Unruh. “They’re learning firsthand how to put the values our Catholic faith teaches into practice and become leaders in the community.”
The Associated Student Body (ASB) members coordinate a variety of school-wide service projects throughout the school year to benefit the community at-large. The ASB came up with the food chain idea last year when the school adopted the theme “We are the hands of Christ.”
“This food chain helps the students learn how to act more like Christ and how we can come together as a community and help others by using our hands just as Christ did,” ASB president Elisia Jensen said.
