With Thanksgiving a week away, the holiday season has officially begun and Paradise Theatre is bringing the holiday spirit to Gig Harbor with the opening of “A Christmas Story” on Friday (Nov. 18).
Written by Philip Grecian, the play is based off the much-loved “A Christmas Story” movie directed by Bob Clark and co-written by Jean Shepherd.
The story follows young Ralphie Parker as he navigates childhood and Christmas, battling the school bully Scut Farkus and needling his parents for his heart’s desire: a Red Ryder BB gun.
(The play) is the same basic plot line as the movie, but there’s actually a little more added. The playwright took the basics of the movie and added more of Jean Shepherds writing.
Jeff Richards, managing director of Paradise Theatre
The play features a cast of veteran actors with Paradise Theatre, plus one or two new faces, said Jeff Richards, director of the play and managing director of Paradise Theatre.
“(The play) is the same basic plot line as the movie, but there’s actually a little more added,” Richards said. “The playwright took the basics of the movie and added more of Jean Shepherd’s writing.”
Adding to the holiday festivities will be the appearance of Santa Claus 30 minutes before every Saturday performance. Santa will take pictures and visit with children.
It’s a fun show. It’s a great way to start off the holidays.
The show will run through Dec. 10, with shows on Friday nights and two shows on Saturdays, though no Sunday shows.
Keeping with its opening-night tradition, on Friday the theatre will feature a wine and cheese mixer with wine sponsored by the Gorman family and Lachine Vineyards.
“It’s a fun show,” Richards said. “It’s a great way to start off the holidays.”
