Two local actors will take lead roles in a new production of the musical “Grease.” It is the closing production in the theater’s 2014-2015 season.
Gig Harbor natives Bryan Gula and Kirsten deLohr Helland will play the roles of Danny Zuko and Rizzo.
Gula, a student at the University of Washington, will play the lead role as greaser Danny Zuko, who falls in love with high-school newcomer Sandy Dumbrowski. Gula is part of the 5th Avenue Rising Star Project, appearing in “Oklahoma!” and “The Music Man.” He also appeared in “RENT.”
Helland will play Pink Ladies leader Betty Rizzo. Previously, Helland has performed in “ELF The Musical,” “Oklahoma!,” “Pirates of Penzance” and “RENT” at the 5th Avenue Theatre. She recently starred as Siren in “Lizard Boy” at the Seattle Repertory Theatre.
“Our production features many of Seattle’s rising talents who are sure to become regulars on stages throughout the region and join the ranks of Seattle’s theatrical royalty,” said David Armstrong, executive producer and artistic director.
The production is directed by Tacoma’s Eric Ankrim, a frequent performer and director in Seattle. Seattle band the Dusty 45s will provide the music including “Beauty School Dropout,” “Greased Lightin’” and “You’re the One that I Want.”
The 5th Avenue Theatre production of “Grease” will run from July 16 to Aug. 2. Single tickets start at $29 and are available by phone at (206) 625-1900, online at 5thAvenue.org or at the the box office, located at 1308 5th Avenue in downtown Seattle.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays; and 1:30 and 7 p.m. Sundays.
