The Gig Harbor Library Chess Club will resume Sept. 10 and continue through Dec. 17 for children in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The class is taught by volunteer Robert Giffords, who has been in charge of the program for several years, according to Holly Smith, Youth Services librarian.
Giffords divides the class according to skill level, either beginning or advanced, and then takes time teaching one while the other group practices their chess skills, Smith said.
Giffords provides chess mats and pieces for attendees and even gives everyone a treat at the end of the hour. Many children from the club have gone on to participate in chess tournaments, Smith said.

“It’s a really great program,” she said, “and a valuable resource we wouldn’t be able to provide without Mr. Giffords.”
The club is free and operates on a drop-in basis. It will meet Thursday evenings from 6 to 7 at the Gig Harbor Branch of the Pierce County Library, 4424 Point Fosdick Dr. NW.
