BarSalona owner Darcy Askegard is always willing to go the extra mile for her customers.
She doesn’t mind cutting customers’ hair in their homes, going to nursing homes or even doing hair and makeup to prepare the deceased for an open-casket funeral.
“(Having happy customers) is everything,” Askegard said. “We do everything.”
The Fox Island salon offers haircuts, manicures, pedicures and more. Askegard, 39, who has lived on the island for 15 years, opened BarSalona five years ago.

“I love the people,” Askegard. “I love our clients. I love making friends. I love making friends and family; it’s just a real community feeling.”
Her clients seem to feel the same way. On Yelp, BarSalona boats three five-star reviews. In 2014, Yelp user Tracie P. wrote:
“I’ve been having Darcy do my hair for years ... I’ve tried other places but always came back to her! Her salon is comfortable, fun and she’s fast! I feel like they are family. Darcy and her staff are caring and really listen to my ever-changing needs.”
Askegard employs three other women at the salon: nail-technician Shelley Clinton, and hair-dressers Karla Jazques and Jill Stocking.
“Doing hair is artistic and creative,” Stocking said. “That’s what’s fun about doing hair. It’s where people come. It’s like the Grand Central Station of the island.”
Askegard hopes to add another level of service for her customers in the future. There is a bar inside the salon, and she’s hoping to lease it to someone interested in running a snack station.
She also wants to bring in some different clientele to the shop — mainly men. BarSalona recently dropped its price for a men’s haircut to $20.
“We do neck shaves, hot towels,” Askegard said. “A lot of people don’t know about that.”
