Gary Sharp, owner of Sharp Business Solutions, is in the business of matchmaking.
“We match qualified business buyers with good businesses. We provide an opinion of value to business owners and assist them as they get ready to sell, and with discretion, find them a buyer match,” Sharp said.
Working with a slogan of “Get Ready to Be Ready” to sell your business program, Sharp helps business owners understand the steps of selling their business by answering two very important questions: What is their business worth and how will a buyer see the business.
Most business owners are great at running their business but when it comes time to sell they are unfamiliar with the process, Sharp said.
“Part of what we do is education,” he said.
Working in a discreet manner is an important piece of the entire operation. It is always important to business owners to keep the possible sale a secret so that customers and employees aren’t adversely affected by a possible sale.
“The joke is we sell your business without telling anybody,” Sharp said.
Having been in residential real estate for approximately 15 years in Gig Harbor and always interested in commercial real estate, Sharp moved into business brokerage almost 20 years ago when he had the opportunity sell a gas station business and became intrigued by the process.
“There were financial, environmental and inventory factors, and I got very excited about numbers and working through the process,” he said. “The word got out that I sold businesses, and we’ve been doing business brokerage for almost 20 years.”
Many people have no idea what business brokers do, he said, adding that businesses continue to be up and running during the entire process. Business owners are busy running their day-to-day operations and usually have no idea what their company is worth.
“We give them an estimate of the business along with a review of their Sellability Score, consisting of the eight factors of Sellability. This is a way to look at your business from the perspective of a potential buyer and how a buyer will look at the business,” Sharp said.
Sharp and his crew believe in a team effort of working with sellers and their accountant and attorney in order to achieve the highest value and make sure all the legal aspects of a transaction are in order.
Charlene and Ronald Tweden contacted Sharp when they decided to sell their family business, Machine Repair and Design, Inc., which is now doing business as Machine Repair and Design.
The business designs and fabricates specialized parts and related machinery, everything from the papers that Brown and Haley candy company use for their candy wrappers to drill bits and spaceship parts.
The couple searched for a broker to help them sell their business and decided that Sharp Business Solutions would be the best fit.
“Sharp Business Solutions is so diversified, and we were impressed,” Charlene said. “They could handle machine shops and doctor’s offices and all kinds of commercial businesses and really walked us through this whole process of finding a potential buyer and taking it clear to the end.”
The process was lengthy and involved but Charlene and her husband were impressed with Sharp’s experience.
“He knows the business from all sides,” she said.
The Twedens operated their business in Sumner for 31 years and their employees’ job security was very important to them.
The entire process took about a year and a half, said Charlene, adding that Sharp took care of interviewing potential buyers and finding just the right match.
