A new event is coming to Gig Harbor on Saturday (June 18), and the only admission fee is a hearty appetite.

The Food Truck Fest is the first event of its kind hosted by PenMet Parks in Gig Harbor and will be held from noon to 5 p.m. in Sehmel Park.

The idea for the event was to appeal to a wider age range of individuals, rather than those with younger kids who typically attend other PenMet Parks events, said recreational manager Gretchen Hayes.

“We really wanted an event that had more of an outreach to the community … everyone likes food and music,” Hayes said. “It’s for kind of a wider audience that anyone can come and enjoy.”

Some of the trucks at the event include Stacks Burgers, Frying Dutchman, VietNom Nom, On The Grind Espresso and many more to provide enough food for a variety of palates.

Included in the lineup is the Gig Harbor General Store, which will be at the event with its gelato pedal cart, one of the few non-food trucks in attendance.

“We’re still working on expanding community awareness that we’re here and what we provide,” Coby Sagle, co-owner of the store, said. “We’ve done really well with community support but I still run into quite a few people that don’t know we’re down there. We’re still getting our name out there to Gig Harbor.”

Also featured at the event will be local band Budapest West and several activities and games for attendees of all ages.

Parking for the event will be available at the park, with additional parking off 74th Avenue with a complimentary shuttle to the event.

A beer, wine and mini cocktail garden will offer beverages to attendees over age 21.

“We hope this becomes a tradition and something we do every year to kick off the summer,” Hayes said. “We’re really excited to have an event like this in Gig Harbor.”

More information about the event, including a full list of food trucks, can be found online at PenMetParks.org.

Sehmel Park is located at 10123 78 Avenue NW in Gig Harbor.
