Infection still spreading in state; Gig Harbor has 118 cases, Key Peninsula rises to 25
Total COVID-19 cases in Pierce County reached 4,593 this week, with 118 reported in Gig Harbor and 25 on the Key Peninsula. The death total is 109, with one each in Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula.
On Tuesday, July 28, there were 77 new cases in Pierce County and three new deaths, all in Parkland.
The county had counted 1,269 cases in the previous 14 days, for an average of 91 a day.
The three deaths reported Tuesday were those of two women in their 50s and 70s respectively, both from Parkland, with underlying health conditions, and a man in his 50s from Parkland with underlying health conditions.
Statewide totals from the illness caused by the coronavirus are at 54,205 cases and 1,548 deaths, up from 53,321 cases and 1,518 deaths on Monday.
Forty-six people with confirmed COVID-19 cases were admitted to Washington state hospitals on Monday, July 20, the most recent date with complete data. March 23 saw 89 people admitted, the highest number to date during the pandemic.
As restrictions have been lifted and people gather in summer weather, infections have shifted from old people to younger ones. About 23% of cases are among 20-29 year olds who make up 14% of the county’s population. Fully 40% of cases are among 20-39 year olds who make up 27% of county population.
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has changed the way it lists cases on its map, making them somewhat harder to follow. It now lists “cumulative confirmed cases” in census tracts, instead of a range. The numbers do not add up to the reported total; it is unclear why.
▪ On the Gig Harbor Peninsula, Census Tract 072505, which includes North Gig Harbor and Canterwood, leads in the number cases, with 25 reported. Census Tract 072408, the lower peninsula west of SR-16 to Wollochet Bay, has 20 cases.
▪ Census Tract 072506, which includes the northwestern shoreline of the Colvos Passage, has 8 cases. Census Tract 07245, the eastern shorline of Henderson Bay, has 6 known cases.
▪ Three Gig Harbor areas have no known cases: Census Tract 972507, central Gig Harbor; Census Tract 072405, the Artondale-Uptown area; and Census Tract 07240, Fox Island.
▪ On the Key Peninsula, Census Tract 072601 (north) has 5 cases, Census Tract 072503 (Wauna) has 8 cases, Census Tract 072601 (Vaughn) has 3 cases, and Census Tract 072603 (Lakebay-Longbranch, including McNeil and Anderson islands), has 5 cases.
