The years leading up to kindergarten are formative for children, so a group of partners are banding together to host a fun, free kickoff event for children age 6 and younger.
Parents are invited to swim, play and gather information about various early learning and kindergarten programs in the Gig Harbor and Key peninsulas.
This marks the first time all the kindergarten programs in the area will get together for an informative event. The group includes public and private schools.
The 2015 Early Learning Jamboree and Kindergarten Kickoff will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday (March 21) at the Tom Taylor YMCA, 10550 Harbor Hill Drive. There will be free games, activities and free lunch. School district staff will be on hand to meet with parents. Free immunizations will also be available on site.
Every child will receive a free book. Families will have access to the YMCA pool, so swimsuits are encouraged. Adults must bring identification to use the pool. Free transportation from the Key Peninsula is available. To see the schedule visit the district website at psd401.net.
Those parents registering a child for kindergarten in the Peninsula School District should bring a packet of forms that can be picked up at the designated elementary school. Children that will be 5 years old by August 31, 2015 are eligible for registration.
The Peninsula School District Board of Directors established an Early Learning Committee in late-2013 and partnerships have developed out of the committee.
Board member Harlan Gallinger is passionate about early learning.
“We cannot do this work alone, which is why we have focused on partnerships to smooth the transition from preschool to kindergarten,” Gallinger said.
The event will be co-sponsored by the Peninsula School District, Gig Harbor/Key Peninsula Early Learning Coalition, Tom Taylor YMCA, Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation.
