It’s about to get more expensive to cross the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. A 50-cent toll increase goes through on Wednesday (July 1).
The new cost to cross the bridge breaks down by service: $5 for Good To Go! passes, $6 for cash tolls and $7 for pay-by-mail tolls.
But these new toll rates will only be in effect for a year before they raise another 50 cents next July.
The Washington State Transportation Commission set the rates, choosing an amount that would pay annual expenses such as the debt service, operations and preservation of the bridge.
At a public hearing in April, drivers were vocally opposed to the increase. Peninsula residents termed the increase “grossly unfair” at the April hearing.
However, the commission voted for the increase to cover the cost of the bridge required under the law.
The increase was recommended by the governor-appointed Citizens Advisory Committee.
