Rollover crash causes backups on state Route 16 during morning commute. 1 person injured
A rollover crash on westbound state Route 16 at Burnham Drive slowed traffic and blocked one lane Tuesday morning.
The accident occurred just before 9 a.m., leaving the left lane blocked. Drivers were told to “expect delays and drive slowly through the area to ensure safety to first responders,” Gig Harbor Police tweeted.
Gig Harbor troopers, @wsdot_tacoma, and @GigHarborFire were all at the scene, according to Trooper Robert Reyer.
The crash was cleared later Tuesday morning.
There were four occupants in the vehicle and speed was the causing factor in this crash, Reyer told the Gateway Tuesday morning.
“The driver admitted to going quite a bit faster than the speed limits, then with the wet road conditions, he just lost control and that’s what caused this vehicle to leave the roadway and roll,” Reyer said.
The right front passenger was transported to a local hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, possibly broken bones, Reyer said.
The two passengers sitting in the back of the vehicle were not wearing seat belts, but left with no serious injuries.
The driver received a ticket for speeding.
There was no other vehicle involved.
“Luckily nobody left in life-threatening condition,” Reyer said. “Now that the rain seems to be here more often, drivers need to be very careful with the roads being wet. Speed limits are really important to follow.”
The scene was cleared and re-opened just after 10 a.m., according to Washington State Department of Transportation.
