Gig Harbor drivers: Work on busy street means you should expect delays. Here’s the plan

Gig Harbor drivers may want to avoid Burnham Drive next week while construction occurs.

The city made drivers aware on Facebook of road work taking place Tuesday, May 23 through Saturday, May 27.

During daytime hours Puget Sound Energy will conduct “road restoration work associated with last year’s new gas pipeline,” according to a Facebook post by the city.

Last year natural gas crews from PSE and InfraSource installed about 1.2 miles of new natural gas line in the area.

“The improvement project is particularly important to strengthen the PSE system for cold weather events,” Bryan Johnston, major projects communications consultant for PSE, previously told the Gateway.

Drivers will see partial lane closures on Burnham Drive, as “AA Asphalt will be returning to complete any necessary road and/or sidewalk restoration,” according to the city’s post.

The work will impact the southern half of Burnham Drive, starting just up from the waterfront all the way up to 96th Street.

Crews will also be at Bujacich Road and 96th Street on a smaller scale.

The city expects the work to cause similar traffic disruption as when the gas line was installed, Katrina Knutson, city administrator, told the Gateway.

“While the underground gas line work has been completed, next week’s work will complete the re-surfacing of the roadway in the same project area,” Jeff Langhlem, public works director for the city, told the Gateway

Langhelm said there will be no detour in place because no roadways will be closed, but using Peacock Hill Avenue via North Harborview Drive and Borgen Boulevard is a viable alternative.
