A head-on wreck Tuesday afternoon is causing traffic backups on state Route 302.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said on X that the crash occurred just before noon.

The westbound lanes of state Route 302 near the Purdy Spit are closed. Drivers will need to use Goodman Drive Northwest, just off the Purdy Bridge, as a detour.

The wreck involved three cars, Anne Nesbit, a spokesperson for the Key Peninsula Fire Department told the Gateway.

As of 12:20 p.m. the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and emergency medical services personnel were at the scene evaluating those involved, she said.

She said she couldn’t provide an update about any injuries at that time.

The WSDOT traffic map showed backups in the Purdy area.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
