Multiple police agencies joined a chase for a stolen Honda Odyssey that was spotted driving recklessly on the Key Peninsula on Aug. 26, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune that the Honda Odyssey was stolen from someone’s driveway the morning of Aug. 18. The victim reported she had accidentally left the van unlocked, Cappetto said.
The vehicle was spotted Aug. 26 and a police pursuit began at 3:16 p.m. near Key Peninsula Highway Northwest and Jackson Lake Road Northwest, according to Cappetto.
“It initially was for a reckless vehicle speed traveling over 90 miles an hour ... the plate was returning back stolen, so that’s what initiated the pursuit,” she said.
After authorities deployed spike strips, which deflated the fleeing vehicle’s back tires, the vehicle continued traveling “in a reckless manner to where it was too far ahead of the pursuit,” Cappetto said. Law enforcement “decided to terminate (the pursuit) for safety reasons.”
A total of seven police vehicles assisted with the pursuit including a unit from the Gig Harbor Police Department and a K-9 unit from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, she wrote in a text message.
The vehicle was located abandoned at 3:27 p.m. at Key Peninsula Highway Northwest and 48th Street Northwest. Authorities deployed the K-9 unit and a Pierce County drone to search for the two suspects, a man and a woman, but they were not found, she said.
“The vehicle was taken for a search warrant, and there is probable cause for both suspects for their arrest,” Cappetto said.
The investigation is ongoing and “very active right now,” she told The News Tribune, adding that anyone with information can submit a tip to the Sheriff’s Office or through Crime Stoppers.
