Puyallup: News

Sewer construction means traffic impacts in the Puyallup area. Here’s where and when

New sewer pipes are coming to the Puyallup area, and construction might affect traffic beginning Tuesday, May 31.

Crews will install new pipes east of Canyon Road East between 144th Street East and 160th Street East. The pipes will serve about 290 acres that do not have public sewer service.

Beginning Monday, June 6, a portion of 160th Street East will be closed between Canyon Road East and 63rd Avenue Court East. Only emergency vehicles and local traffic will be allowed access. Detour signs will be present.

“Expanding the sewer utility provides modern services to homes and businesses in the designated urban area and reduces Pierce County’s reliance on septic tanks, which can cause water quality issues over time if not maintained,” according to a Pierce County news release.

Contractor crews will work six, 12-hour days per week from Monday through Saturday, excluding holidays. The sewer extension project is split into eight phases, and the dates are subject to change:

  • Closure 1: 160th Street East from May 31 to Aug. 14
  • Closure 2: 62nd Avenue East by 144th Street East from Aug. 15-21
  • Closure 3: 152nd Street East from Aug. 22 to Sept. 25
  • Closure 4: 62nd Avenue East by 152nd Street East from Sept. 26 to Oct. 9
  • Closure 5: 62nd Avenue East by 160th Street East from Oct. 10 to Dec. 4
  • Closure 6: 152nd Street East from Dec. 5-23
  • Closure 7: 58th Avenue East from Jan. 9-22, 2023
  • Closure 8: 58th Avenue East from Jan. 23 to March 4, 2023

At the end of the project, crews will have installed about:

  • 12,360 feet of gravity sewer pipe
  • 1,150 feet of pressure sewer pipe
  • 34 manholes
  • Five corrosion-resistant manholes
  • A valve vault
  • A private dryline sewer main on 58th Avenue Court East

The $8.1 million project is funded by revenue from connection charges and monthly sewer rates and is expected to finish by spring 2023. More information on the project can be found on the county’s website at bit.ly/3wrGdjx.
