Planning to bike or stroll along this trail? You may want to avoid part of it this week

Foothills Trail users that pass through Orting may need to reconsider their route beginning Aug. 22.

Over half a mile of the trail southeast of the city, starting from Charter Park at 425 Washington Ave. SE, will be closed from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Aug. 25. A levee along the Carbon River is scheduled for repair. There’s no detour.

“Two sections of the levee – a 45-foot stretch and a 145-foot stretch – have eroded over time due to high water events. Existing rock along the slope of the levee will be rearranged. Additional large rocks will be added,” according to Pierce County’s website.

A bike rack and bench on that portion of the trail will be removed at the same time frame crews are onsite. It will be reinstalled after they finish the repairs needed on the levee. Repair work such as this is a part of Pierce County’s annual levee repair program.
