Pierce County road with ‘a history of accidents’ is getting $2 million in safety upgrades

There’s a road in Edgewood that is expected to get safety upgrades soon.

Chrisella Road East between 36th Street East and 48th Street East is getting new paving, guardrails, curve warning signs and radar speed feedback signs, among other improvements.

The city posted a bid for the project last month. As of Nov. 8, the city has yet to find a contractor to do the construction work. The plan is to begin work by late spring and finish by late summer.

Public Works Director Jeremy Metzler said the plan is to make the road, which is about eight-tenths of a mile, safer for drivers and pedestrians. The project will cost over $2 million, paid for by the state Department of Transportation’s highway safety improvement program.

“There’s been a history of accidents on that road,” Metzler said.

The speed limit for the road is 25 miles per hour, but many drivers go faster than that, Metzler said. It’s a route commuters use in the evening when Meridian Avenue East is clogged with traffic.

“We’re just trying to try to make sure the folks that use that route respect the fact that it is a residential street,” Metzler said.
