Puyallup elementary school faces ‘major damage’ after fire sprinkler system bursts
Update: The school reopened Tuesday, Jan. 23.
Initial story: The Puyallup School District has closed Woodland Elementary School for the rest of the week due to a water main break.
“Restoration is needed due to a significant water leak that has caused major damage. More information will be shared by Friday. No Right at School childcare. All school activities are canceled,” the school district posted at 12:57 p.m. Jan. 17 on social media.
Superintendent John Polm told The News Tribune that a fire sprinkler system broke, leaving less than an inch of water on some floors. The water impacted about two-thirds of the school, including the kitchen and library, he said.
Laura Marcoe, assistant superintendent of business services, told The News Tribune that the school district is still assessing the cost of fixing the water damage.
About 600 students attend Woodland Elementary at 7707 112th St. E.
