Semi ran red light, causing wreck and backups on Canyon Road, Sheriff’s Department says

A semi-trailer ran a red light on Canyon Road on Tuesday, causing a wreck that sent three people to the hospital, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss told The News Tribune the wreck happened just before 9:30 a.m. at Military Road East. It completely blocked the intersection.

“Investigators determined that the semi-truck was traveling southbound on Canyon Road East and ran the red light at Military Road East,” Moss said via email. “It struck two vehicles in the intersection before crossing over into northbound lanes and striking another vehicle. The semi-truck came to rest against a utility pole.”

None of the injuries were life threatening, Moss said.

He said deputies cited the semi driver for second-degree negligent driving.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department posted about the wreck on the agency’s website and on social media Wednesday afternoon.

“We sent out an alert via our PCSD app within minutes of the collision, notifying users that there would be significant backups in the area,” the post said.
