Expect traffic changes at busy Puyallup interchange this week

Puyallup drivers can expect lane and ramp closures on state Route 167 over the next four days.

According to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation, crews will close lanes and ramps at the SR 167 and North Meridian Avenue interchange from the evening of Oct. 20 to the morning of Oct. 24.

These closures are part of the State Route 167 Completion Project. Crews will be doing “electrical work, traffic signal adjustments and restriping marks,” according to the release.

Here is what drivers can expect.

Nightly, Monday, Oct. 20 and Tuesday, Oct. 21

  • 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. – One lane of southbound SR 167 from state Route 410 to North Meridian Avenue will be closed.
  • 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. – One lane of northbound North Meridian Avenue will be closed.
  • 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. – One lane of southbound North Meridian Avenue will be closed.
  • 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. – One lane of northbound SR 167 from North Meridian Avenue to SR 410 will be closed.

Nightly, Wednesday, Oct. 22 and Thursday, Oct. 23

  • 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. – The southbound SR 167 ramp to westbound SR 512 will be closed.

What is the State Route 167 Completion Project?

The state Route 167 Completion Project will build 6 miles of new, tolled highway between Puyallup and Tacoma. Crews will complete the work in stages.

  • Stage 1: Completed the new Wapato Way East bridge and SR 99 roundabout in Fife. This stage is done.
  • Stage 2: Creates an expressway between I-5 and the Port of Tacoma. This expressway is scheduled to open in 2026.
  • Stage 3: This stage involves work between state Route 161/North Meridian Avenue and state Route 410. Work began earlier in 2025.
  • Stage 4: Construction between North Meridian Avenue and Interstate 5. Work is expected to start in 2026.

The entire project is expected to be completed by 2030, the release said.
