Puyallup Foursquare Church to distribute school supplies through outreach program

Thousands of students from school districts all around East Pierce County will benefit at the Puyallup Foursquare Church’s inaugural Foursquare Cares outreach program on Saturday (Aug. 29).

Donated backpacks full of school supplies will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., plus additional free services like haircuts, dental and vision screenings, sports physicals and a picnic lunch will also be available.

“No pre-registration is required,” said Britney Wade, the church’s communications team leader. “It’s first come, first serve.”

The program will take place at the church’s North campus in downtown Puyallup, located at 601 9th Ave. S.E.

The Puyallup Foursquare Church was founded in 1998 by senior pastor Roger Archer and his wife, Tina. The couple started it as a home Bible study. It soon grew to offer services at Ferrucci Junior High School, then Cascade Christian preschool, before finally finding a permanent home with the opening of its North campus in 2001.

In 2012, the church purchased its South campus on South Hill at 16120 Meridian East.

Wade said the people of the church felt inspired by its core mission statement to organize the Foursquare Cares program.

“Part of our mission statement says, ‘We know and are known by our community.’ We want to live out our mission statement,” Wade said. “We want to be a voice in our community and be there for our people.”

In previous years, the Puyallup Foursquare Church has hosted City Blast, a 5K and 10K race at the Washington State Fairgrounds, and the Pumpkin Patch Bash, also at the fairgrounds, which attracted 20,000 people in its first year.

Sound Family Medicine will provide sports physicals and vision screenings at Saturday’s event, and Walgreens will administer free flu shots and multiple community-based volunteers will provide free dental screenings and haircuts.

Church staff members will provide hot dogs, chips and water for lunch, Wade said.

There will also be fun, age-appropriate activities for elementary and high school students.

Event organizers also expressed their thanks to sponsors Walrath Trucking, Renewal Remodels & Additions, Korum Automotive Group, A Advanced Septic & Construction Services, Kia of Puyallup, Millennium Valley Chiropractic and Toyota of Puyallup for assistance in putting the event together.
