A person jumped from the second story of an apartment building to flee a raging fire in Sumner early Wednesday morning.

East Pierce Fire & Rescue crews were sent to a report of a fire with a person trapped in the 15000 block of 52nd Street East around 2 a.m.

“Crews arrived to find the second story of the four-unit building engulfed in flames,” East Pierce tweeted.

The jumper was taken to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, East Pierce said. There were no other injuries reported.

The fire destroyed two second-story apartments while two units below were damaged by water. Four families were displaced, and the American Red Cross is assisting them, East Pierce said.

Fire marshals were investigating the cause of the fire.
