A man who hit a 12-year-old Tacoma girl with his car as she ran to catch a school bus is being held in lieu of $5,000 bail after pleading not guilty to vehicular assault.
Tadarwin Hardy, 50, also was charged with third-degree driving on a suspended license. He was arraigned Thursday
The crash occurred about 7:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of East 72nd Street.
Officers arrived to find a bystander holding the girl’s head off the pavement as a crowd slowly gathered. Hardy was in the crowd and told police he hit her with his Buick Regal after she “darted out into traffic,” according to charging papers.
The girl was taken to a hospital, where she required eight staples to close a head injury and underwent knee surgery.
Hardy smelled of marijuana and had a green tongue, making officers suspicious he swallowed pot before police arrived.
Toxicology results are pending.
