AP

A motorcyclist was believed to be drunk when he drove straight into an elk in the road late Tuesday.

Troopers said a 51-year-old Orting man was traveling east on state Route 162 about five miles from Orting when he struck an elk about 10:10 p.m.

He and his passenger, a 27-year-old Lake Tapps woman, were taken to Tacoma General Hospital with serious injuries.

The Honda GL 150012 was totaled.

No word on whether the elk made it.

The road was closed for 3 ½ hours while troopers investigated the crash.

The driver was expected to be booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of vehicular assault and DUI.
