A man stole his girlfriend’s car, struck two vehicles before crashing it and tried to carjack three different people before witnesses stopped him Monday, Lakewood police said.
The incident started about 4 p.m. when someone called 911 to report a man had stolen a car in the 9800 block of Lawndale Avenue SW.
After arguing with his girlfriend, the man allegedly took her car and sped down Gravelly Lake Drive. He slid sideways into oncoming traffic and struck two cars before crashing. One vehicle carried four Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldiers; the other vehicle carried a sole driver.
Police said the man tried to carjack the solo driver he hit but was unsuccessful. He then demanded a woman’s car but was foiled when she remotely activated the lock. He moved on to a third vehicle and demanded the person behind the wheel drive him away, but several people intervened.
A sheriff’s deputy came across the scene and arrested the 23-year-old on suspicion of vehicular assault, attempted robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, DUI and driving on a suspended license.
A stolen pistol was found on the floorboard of the one of the cars the man tried to steal, police said.
One soldier was seriously injured from the crash and taken to Madigan Army Medical Center.
The man allegedly tried to kick out a window of the patrol car while being transported to jail.
