He shot his friend in Parkland ‘without provocation.’ Now he’s wanted for murder
A man suspected of fatally shooting a friend in Parkland on New Year’s Day said he “thought I was supposed to,” according to court documents.
Pierce County prosecutors have charged Cayden Osley, 21, with first-degree murder and second-degree assault in connection with the Jan. 1 death of 40-year-old Sorin Lay. Osley is not in custody. A warrant was issued for his arrest Wednesday.
He is also wanted for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend in November.
Lay’s death was the first homicide of the year in Pierce County.
Charging papers give this account of the shooting:
Osley, Lay and another friend got together early Jan. 1 and drove to the area of South Ainsworth Avenue and Wheeler Street. Once they parked, the three men allegedly smoked heroin and methamphetamine.
“Afterwards, the victim was offering to get the defendant a job when the defendant, without provocation, drew a semi-automatic pistol and shot the victim one time while the victim was seated in the back,” prosecutors wrote in charging papers.
Osley then pointed the gun at his other friend and demanded that he drive him to another location, where Osley got out of the Honda Accord and fled on foot with the gun.
The friend then called another friend and told her about the shooting. The woman called 911, sending deputies to the 1600 block of Wheeler Street where they found Lay slumped in the backseat.
Lay was pronounced dead at the scene. He died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The friend told detectives he was “too freaked out” to call 911 himself, records say.
In addition to the homicide, Osley is charged with second-degree assault and second-degree kidnapping in the Nov. 28 stabbing of his girlfriend.
Osley stabbed her in the stomach and arm when she tried to break up with him, according to court documents. About a month prior to the stabbing, he allegedly held her hostage in a U-Haul.
Osley struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and left a rehabilitation facility in the fall, records say.
