Auburn woman charged with leaving two young children home alone for 5 days

An Auburn woman is accused of abandoning her two young children in a filthy apartment for five days without food or water.

King County prosecutors charged Qiara Te Dennis, 23, with two counts of second-degree abandonment of a dependent person. She is to be arraigned July 2.

Police were called to Dennis’ apartment in the 3700 block of H Street Northeast on June 14 after neighbors reported a 3-year-old girl crying hysterically while clawing at a second-story window.

The building manager opened the door for officers, who in their report noted the “overpowering smell of human feces and rotting food coming from inside the unit.”

Inside were a 3-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy who were unclothed, covered in rashes and had feces clumped on their bodies and in their hair.

The children had no access to water and only a bag of grapes was found in the apartment, court documents show. There were piles of vomit and feces on the floor and police had to bathe each child twice before handing them over to protective custody.

Dennis had been arrested five days earlier on suspicion of driving on a suspended license but apparently did not tell anybody she had left her children at home alone.

She had four warrants out for her arrest when she was taken into custody.

“Qiara recklessly abandoned her children and as a result of being abandoned, she created an environment where the children suffered substantial bodily harm and an environment where they risked imminent death if there was no intervention,” prosecutors wrote in charging papers.
