Houston police bike riders finish charity trek in Tacoma

Tacoma saw an influx of police officers on bicycles Tuesday, off-duty and from out of town.

A group of 40 riders from the Houston Police Bike Relay Team picked Tacoma this year as the destination for their ride, which raises funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The group left June 17, pedaling more than 150 miles a day to cover the 2,900 miles to Tacoma. Most are officers. Some are family or friends supporting someone affected by blood cancer.

Local officers welcomed them at the Tacoma Police Department, and escorted them downtown to Hotel Murano.

The ride is in its 33rd year, and has raised of $5.4 million for the charity, with officers pedaling 71,481 miles.
