Crews put out fire engulfing car, brush off freeway in Tacoma

A car that crashed into a tree Tuesday off Interstate 5 in Tacoma caught fire and spread flames to brush beside the freeway.

The 72-year-old driver from University Place passed out at the wheel about 6 p.m. near Interstate 705, possibly due to low blood sugar, Washington State Patrol spokesman Guy Gill said.

The man was not injured and was able to get himself out of the vehicle, but he was taken to the hospital as a precaution, Gill said.

Fire crews arrived at the scene and extinguished the blaze.
