Crews work to keep Tacoma brush fire from spreading to houses

UPDATE as of 5:15 p.m. The fire is under control, and crews are working on hot spots.

“We prevented it from getting into the treeline that is kind of the backyard for people’s houses,” Tacoma Fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.

INITIAL POST: Tacoma Fire crews were fighting a brush fire as of 4:45 p.m. at South G Street and South 34th Street, the agency said via Twitter.

They were fighting the 200 foot by 200 foot blaze in the grass there, trying to keep it from trees and houses, they said.

Fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said the blaze is on a bluff above Interstate 5.
