Torch may have started large debris fire in Tacoma

A torch used to dismantle a vehicle likely caused a large debris fire that sent dark smoke over Northeast Tacoma Monday evening, Tacoma Fire said Tuesday.

The blaze burned four or five acres starting about 5:30 p.m. near the 5000 block of 12th Street Northeast, and went on for hours.

A large pile of burning tires caused the dark smoke. Other items that caught fire included sheds, old vehicles, a semitrailer and a bus.

One person who tried to fight the fire was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Firefighters estimated the loss at$100,000.

Tacoma Fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said the owner of the 17-acre parcel does not appear to reside there and its use is unclear.
