LAKEWOOD: Man tells police he was thinking of suicide when he shot at officer

No one was hurt Friday in a shootout between a Lakewood police officer and a suicidal young man, authorities said.

The man later was arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail for investigation of attempted first-degree murder, said Lakewood police spokesman Bret Farrar. The man is to be arraigned Monday.

The incident began about 12:30 a.m. when the officer, patrolling 108th Street Southwest, spotted a suspicious car parked at an apartment complex, Farrar said.

After reporting the car to dispatchers, the officer walked toward it and demanded that the driver show his hands, Farrar said. The driver repeatedly refused until coming up with a gun and opening fire, he said.

The officer returned fire before retreating and calling for backup, Farrar said. The young man was arrested later.

According to Farrar, the man told investigators he was upset after a fight with his girlfriend and was considering suicide when the officer confronted him.
