Three men suspected of fatally shooting a man at a Tacoma motel last week were trying to rob him of drugs and money, prosecutors said.
Pierce County prosecutors on Tuesday charged Marcus Boykin, 30; Aron Skaro, 32; and Raphael Smith, 32, with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the Aug. 20 death of Kevin Young.
Boykin and Skaro pleaded not guilty and each was ordered jailed in lieu of $1 million bail. A warrant has been issued for Smith, who is not in custody.
Charging papers give this account:
Young, 41, and his girlfriend were hanging out at the King Oscar Motel, 8820 S. Hosmer St., with a woman Young’s girlfriend met in the Pierce County Jail.
The woman drove the couple to a nearby convenience store about 3 a.m. so Young could withdraw $30. She left shortly after dropping Young and his girlfriend back at their motel room.
Moments later, Boykin and Smith burst into the room with a shotgun and demanded cash, prosecutors allege. Young was shot in the stomach during an ensuing argument.
Boykin and Smith allegedly ran to a waiting car driven by Skaro and fled. Young was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.
