Drunken, texting driver arrested after hitting Bonney Lake bicyclist

A Bonney Lake bicyclist was hurt late Thursday after an alleged drunken driver hit him, the Washington State Patrol said Friday.

The 53-year-old bicyclist suffered a broken ankle and several abrasions, and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, trooper Guy Gill said.

Troopers arrested a 23-year-old Lake Tapps man, who they said was drunk and sending a text message on his cell phone when he hit the bicyclist about 10 p.m. on state Route 410 at 171st Avenue East.

The man was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of vehicular assault.

The driver was traveling east on state Route 410 when his vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and hit the bicyclist.

The driver kept going but returned to the scene once another motorist flashed his headlights to stop the man and told him he’d hit a bicyclist.
