Man whose body was found in South Hill home died of multiple gunshot wounds

A man whose badly decomposed body was found Monday inside a South Hill home died of multiple gunshots, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Investigators have not been able to confirm that the body is 30-year-old Brandon Shane Zomalt of Puyallup, although they believe that’s who it is.

The first hint that Zomalt was dead came from bloody carpet and flooring found Aug. 13 along Peasley Canyon Road in Auburn. A federal agent spotted smoke in a wooded area and stopped to put out the fire. He saw a man who had been trying to burn the bloodied carpet flee in a dark-colored SUV.

DNA testing linked the blood to Zomalt, who was never reported missing.

Sheriff’s deputies were sent to a South Hill home in the 13000 block of Military Road East on Monday and found a man’s body in a garage where the carpet and flooring had been torn out.

No one has been arrested.

Investigators are trying to find the owner of the house and several others who occasionally stayed there, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
