Woman pleads not guilty to starting fire at Tacoma courthouse

A woman accused of starting a fire in the bathroom of the County-City Building in Tacoma pleaded not guilty Thursday.

The 41-year-old allegedly started the blaze about 9 a.m. Wednesday in a trash can in the women’s restroom on the second floor of the courthouse.

Officials evacuated the building, and firefighters put out the fire. No one was hurt.

Investigators saw the woman going in and out of the bathroom on surveillance footage, prosecutors said.

When they contacted her, she handed officers a fake ID and tried to hide her methamphetamine, according to charging papers.

She’s charged with second-degree reckless burning, drug possession and first-degree criminal impersonation.

Bail is set at $250,000, and if released, she will not be allowed to have matches, or any other incendiary devices.
