Firefighters battled a blaze in a training area of Joint Base Lewis-McChord Monday.
Crews contained the fire, which started about 2 p.m. northeast of Yelm, and they planned to monitor it overnight.
About 40 acres in the area of Range 19 burned. The base said via Twitter that the fire appeared to have started from military training.
East Gate Road was closed because of the fire and heavy smoke, and reopened about 8:15 p.m.
