Man pleads guilty in fatal Roy wreck

A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty Wednesday in Pierce County Superior Court to causing the car crash that killed his best friend.

Judge Frank Cuthbertson sentenced Joshua Brake of Toledo, Washington, to four years in prison after Brake pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

Authorities said Brake was at the wheel of a car that crashed about 3:45 a.m. June 9, 2013, on state Route 507 between Yelm and Roy.

Brake’s good friend, 26-year-old Beau Dawson of Seattle, suffered extensive head injuries in the crash and died later that day. Another passenger and Brake also were badly hurt.

Investigators said the trio had just left a party in Yelm where they had been drinking alcohol.

A witness to the crash told authorities Brake’s car was traveling at high speed when it spun off the road and hit a tree.

Tests showed Brake’s blood-alcohol level at the hospital was 0.087. The legal limit in Washington is 0.08.
