Man gets 7 years for causing wreck that killed Puyallup woman on her birthday

A Sumner man who was driving drunk when he broadsided a car, killing a Puyallup woman, pleaded guilty Friday to vehicular homicide.

Superior Court Judge Edmund Murphy sentenced Stephen Earl Killmer, 25, to seven years, two months in prison.

Investigators said Killmer had a blood-alcohol level of 0.24 – three times the legal limit – when he ran a red light at Canyon Road East and state Route 512 on Jan. 26 and hit the car carrying Donna and Robert Akridge.

Donna Akridge, who’d turned 59 that day, died at the scene.

Robert Akridge wrote a letter to Murphy earlier this year in which he described the sense of loss he feels without his wife, whom he called his soul mate.

“He stole the rest of Donna’s life, and he stole the rest of my life with Donna,” Akridge wrote. “And it is a terrible, terrible loss.”
