Police rescue man who called 911 with plans to jump from Tacoma overpass

Police kept a man from jumping off a Tacoma overpass Monday after he called 911 to advise officers of his plan.

The man called about 3:30 p.m. from the bridge at East 34th Street and state Route 7, police spokeswoman Shelbie Boyd said.

Crews blocked the highway in both directions under the overpass, and negotiators got the man back over the railing and took him to a hospital, Boyd said.

About 40 minutes after the call police reopened the street.
