Officers at Medical Examiner’s Office escort Tukwila firefighter who died in I-5 wreck

Fire and police crews gathered Monday at the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office to escort a Tuwkila firefighter who died over the weekend in a motorcycle wreck on Interstate 5 in Fife.

Members of the Tuwkila Fire, Tacoma Fire and Tacoma police departments escorted 42-year-old Justin Karwhite about 3 p.m. from the office in Tacoma to an area funeral home, Tacoma Fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said.

Karwhite, of Auburn, died about Saturday when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding, crossed a line on the northbound freeway and was hit by a tractor-trailer.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were involved, Washington State Patrol trooper Guy Gill said. Witnesses did not report erratic driving before the wreck.

Crews closed three lanes of I-5 for several hours after the crash. leading to a nine-mile backup.

Investigators had no updates Monday about what caused the crash, and were looking for additional witnesses.
