Woman killed in Tacoma apartment fire

A 71-year-old woman was found dead inside a Tacoma apartment Tuesday after the building’s sprinklers extinguished a fire.

Firefighters were called to the Annobee apartments, a senior housing complex in the 300 block of North I Street, just before 11 a.m. and began evacuating residents who had not already gotten outside.

Crews then began searching the units.

A body was found in a basement level apartment. The Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the woman’s name.

The blaze started in the same apartment where the body was found, Tacoma Fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said. Investigators determined the fire started by smoking materials igniting a chair.

No one else was hurt.
