A 47-year-old man shot in the chest during a drive-by shooting Thursday night in Tacoma was expected to survive, police said Friday.
Officers were looking for two suspects in a maroon, four-door SUV and trying to determine what prompted them to open fire.
Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool gave this account of the shooting, which took place just before 10 p.m. in the 3600 block of East L Street:
The victim had just dropped a friend off and got inside his vehicle, which was parked on the street. He saw the SUV coming down the street and waited for it to pass so he could pull out.

The SUV partially blocked the man in and a man in the backseat pointed a gun at him. The victim reached down for his own gun but was shot in the chest before he could retrieve it.
Detectives do not believe the victim knew the shooter. A motive has not been determined.
