The telephone call came Friday night.
The caller, who claimed to be a police detective, wanted to know how many guns and how much money a man kept in his Tacoma home.
Suspicious, the man hung up and called police.
The department is concerned that the caller was phishing for information and is warning about a possible scam.
“The Tacoma Police Department doesn’t contact people by phone and ask random questions like this,” spokeswoman Loretta Cool said Monday.
The caller dialed about 8 p.m. Friday. After the man refused to answer his questions, the caller rang twice more.
It was a male caller from a restricted phone number, Cool said.
